Socorro is “IN” History Books; Falvey, Mares, Navarrette and Stoltz Claim 2009 STATE CROWN
Double click the headline to read. . .June 13, 2009 Senior Cory Falvey hit a two run home run to tie the game and a Grand Slam to break the game open and helped lead Socorro to a 12-7 Texas High School 5A Championship. Falvey’s 6 RBI’s and two home runs followed a home run and 3 RBI’s in the semi-final game earned him Most Valuable Player honors. Senior Bobby Mares pitched the semi-final win added a pair of hits. Senior George Stoltz continued playing with a torn ulnar collateral ligament and served as the designated hitter and scored a run. Senior Jessiray Navarrette set a record for on base percentage at the State Tournament. Falvey’s three homers set a 5A Final Four record and also gave him the highest season home run total for an El Paso high schooler. Sixty years of history coupled with 12 years of commitment and 1 year of accomplishment have landed a second State Championship for El Paso. June 12, 2009 Senior Cory Falvey hit a three run home run to break a 3-3 tie and Senior Bobby Mares followed with a solo shot going “back to back” to break open Socorro’s eventual 11-3 win over Austin Westlake and advance to play for the Texas High School Championship. Senior George Stoltz opened the game with a triple on the second pitch in the bottom of the first inning and scored the first run of the game. Senior Jessiray Navarrette added a pair of hits and stood strong on a short hop on a first and third situation to tag a Westlake runner out at home and keep the game tied at 3-3. Mares went the full seven innings and picked up the win.
