Spring 2006 Recap

We had two teams, an 11 and under squad which continues to carry the Bandit banner and a 14 and under squad which has moved on to the high school ranks. Both teams won their respective age specific divisions in regular season play and each won 4 tournament championships.

We will remember our 14 and under squad as the most academically honored Bandit squad ever. All 13 members of what we refer to as our ‘Stanford/Rice’ team were either members of their respective school National Junior Honor Societies or/and involved in recognized ‘Gifted and Talented’ curriculums.

C J Avalos, Kyle Bumpas, Mark Gandara and Chris Rubio all occupied ‘First Chairs’ in their respective school bands. Mark Vargas was a member of the 8th Grade Slider District Championship basketball team. Brian Hebblethwaite, Eric Stoltz, C J Avalos, Nathan Pena, Mike Bolaski and Josh Avalos were district finalists in track. Lance Gruber, Nathan Pena, Mark Gandara, Vince Centeno and C J Avalos were members of the Clarke District Championship football team. Tommy Valle, Chris Rubio, C J Avalos, Vince Centeno, Lance Gruber, Mark Gandara and Nathan Pena were members of the Clarke District Championship baseball team. Mike Bolaski was the leader on the Desert View District Championship baseball team. C J Avalos and Eric Stoltz won their individual school Science Fair competitions. C J Avalos, Nathan Pena and Eric Stoltz were named as the “Most Outstanding Eighth Grade Male Student” at their respective schools. Kyle Bumpas graded out in the top 2% in the Nation with his eighth grade PSAT scores.

The Bandits 14 and under squad concluded their season winning the National Championship “Round the Horn” contest at the Super Series World Series. Finally thanks to the pitching of Brian Hebblethwaite Sr., Kyle Bumpas won the right to call himself a “National Champion” by winning the Home Run Derby at the World Series defeating the previous year’s 13 year old champion from College Station Texas. The team finished #13 in the Final National USSSA Power Rankings out of 1262 teams and #1 in the West Texas Regional standings. Head Coach Larry Hernandez was assisted by Coach David Bumpas, Coach George Stoltz, Coach Charlie Avalos and Coach Brian Hebblethwaite.
